The chicken or the egg,
the cart before or after the horse, sometimes there is no simple
answer that explains every thing to resolution. |
The EVOLVING SNOWMOBILER |
WHO ARE YOU ??
So
what kind a person would want to be a part of this grand, cold,
unimaginable experiment?
When
someone said
"SNO-JET" did you end up
snowmobiling when you actually thought you were signing up to
leave the country on a SNOWBIRD WINTER HOLIDAY?
AN OUTDOORSMAN ??
- It
would appear that besides the obvious "Outdoorsman"
characteristics.
OK
Outdoorsman and...fact that you like to fix things that are
engineered wholly inadequate, and are engineered for a warm
weather climate, but have been adapted for use in sub zero
winter temperatures?
THE
MOTORHEAD ??
-You
would like to tinker mechanically? I use Tinker with a little
sarcasm! LOL
-Slang
Definition:
Motorhead
What
mechanical dude or motor head would shell out hard earned
cash for a
"Winter"
recreational enginized snowmobile just to bomb around in the
extreme cold and have to spend more time fixing the snowmobiles
than actually riding them?
MOTOR HEAD PROJECT
-Through
out the history of the snowmobile, every snowmobile new or old,
out of desperation or dogged determination could be defined as a
Motor
head project!
-OK this is clearly part of
the equation, Through out history whether it is auto racing etc
or snowmobiling, there are speed contests and the
"Driver"
comes out in individuals. This does not mean you have to be a
racer. But it means when there is no rules it can be an all out
competition, and it may be for speed, turning ability, deep snow
capability, or even fuel economy. As a snowmobiler, experience
teaches you to pick your battles!!
You very well may be a
"Mechanical"
MOTORHEAD long before you would be consider
yourself a
"Driver"
...or
vise versa. What would the
"Inspiration"
be
to ride a
"Iron
horse" ? The
cold? The bucking? The freedom? |
THE DRIVER ??

-Lets start with a driver...I think
that the urge to drive and operate a motorized oversized go cart
on skis and tracks is the challenge at hand.

What
makes you a "Driver?"
Well to start with, with your
car for instance first you enjoy driving.
Can we rule out anyone who gets car
sickness, and has to take gravel every time they get in the air
!! LOL !! You may even do it as
a profession or driving may be part of your professional
capacity. In any case you anticipate traffic, you know how to
"merge" and understand when your vehicle goes into a slightly
icy slide in the winter it is no time to lock up the brakes or
let go of the steering wheel and cover your eyes!! As a
snowmobiler you enjoy the variety of
trails, fields & ditch banging variety. Have you
discovered that by adjusting the front suspension, or by pulling
up the front strap or changing the moment coupling in the rear
suspension occurs you can change ski pressure, minute changes
that change the feel and overall ride that the snowmobile
provides in a given snow condition or train, a change that may
or may not compliment the aggressive quality of the skis or
track.
Is there a PROJECT at
hand?
You adapt to snow conditions and find a faster line across
and thru the given terrain and you
adapt to these changing conditions quickly.
After a few good rides you notice that when you
turn on a packed trail that the sled does not actually
go where the skis are pointed....in stock car terms, the sled pushes....like
a dump truck or a heavy North American automobile built largely thru into the
90's it is just about impossible to create a "loose handling"
snowmobile. Conventional automobile builders believed that if
you "go into the turn" or "traffic circle" a little to fast that
you would be better off "with the wheels turned" going straight
off the curved section of the road straight into the ditch than
get loose and have to slightly counter steer your vehicle
slightly and allow it to slow down to regain control...Holy
Hanna! does this sound like a good handling snowmobile!
After some
Adjustments you find your self putting your sled
deeper into the corner, whether a trail bordering a slough or
the edge of an aggressive rolling stubble field. You "hang
10"...OK lets stop there...that pertains to water surfing! not
snowmobiling! LOL

"Motor
Head" and "Driver"
Can you sense your engine is
RPM'ing thru and out of its power band leaving cards on
the table for
another day and another race?
Is
there a PROJECT at hand?
Question: And
why would you think this is a potential project...or actual
problem?
And would you like to adjust it by trying different
weights in the primary clutch so you can out accelerate your
buddies?
Let me
guess you run a felt marker up and down your clutches to get a
handle on shift out for a given MPH.
Do you carry a felt
marker to mark the clutches?
Is there a PROJECT
at hand?
Do you have to shove your secondary "in just a bit" in the
morning when your sled is idling thru its warm up...to say if
you don't shove the secondary in a hair first thing during the
longest engine warm up of the day...that "hamstring tight" belt
is gonna just start
(RIGHT CLICK)
squealing
and squealing
....when idling
extensively at warm up, the squealing will give away just how
"tightened up" your set up is!!
Is that evidence of
a PROJECT ?
Is the belt visibly running all the way up and down the
clutch es,
and indication that your transmission is engaged fully and
utilized to its maximum?
Is there a PROJECT at
hand?
Is this evidence you
are a MOTORHEAD?

WORK IN PROGRESS!
Question: And why
would you think this is a potential project...or actual problem?
Answer: Because
history tends to repeat itself...everyone knows that simple fact.
